Oral Hygiene

The importance of this basic dental procedure and at-home practice cannot be over emphasized. The old adage “prevention is better than cure”, in our belief, rings true.

At Budi Dental a routine clean consists of the following: removal of plaque, flossing of the teeth, ultrasonic scale (to remove calcified plaque deposits) and prosmile (removal of external tooth staining). This leaves your mouth fresh and silky smooth.

At an oral hygiene appointment, the presence of periodontal pocketing will be charted on your file, to determine if there is current periodontal disease. Sometimes, however, you may need follow-up hygiene appointments due to excessive amounts of calculus build-up or in the presence of active periodontal disease.

FAQs on Oral Hygiene

Q. What is gum disease?

Gingivitis is an early sign of gum disease. You may notice gingival swelling and a red appearance, bleeding gums when brushing and this may contribute towards bad breath.

Gingivitis is caused by the bacteria in dental plaque (biofilm). Regular scale and cleans with our dentist can help you manage gingivitis.

Q. What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a progression from gingivitis, with 2 distinct clinical characteristics; the presence of a pocket around a tooth and subsequent loss of supporting bone and tissue.

Periodontitis is responsible for not only loose teeth, but also the loss of teeth! There is strong evidence that the presence of periodontal disease is an indicator for diabetes, pre term low birth weight babies and coronary artery disease.

Current research also suggests a relationship between periodontal disease and kidney and respiratory disease, however more research is required.

As such it is very important to have this disease treated. Treatment in most cases entails deep subgingival scaling to remove hardened plaque. This is generally performed under local anaesthetic.
